How to use Unlock PDF

  1. Upload the password-protected PDF.

  2. Enter the password you already know.

  3. Click Unlock to create a password-free copy.

  4. Download the unlocked PDF.

What this can and cannot remove

This removes protection from documents you can already open. If the PDF opens once you type a password you know, that password can be stripped so you stop typing it. If it opens without any prompt but refuses to let you print or copy, those are owner permission flags and they come off too.

What it cannot do is guess a password you do not have. That is not a limitation of the tool but of AES-256 encryption, and any site claiming to crack an unknown password is either running a brute-force attack that will fail against a decent password or is not doing what it says.

Reasons to remove protection

Bank statements and payslips arrive encrypted with your date of birth or document number, which is fine for delivery and miserable for storage: your local search cannot index an encrypted file, so a folder of them is unsearchable. Strip the passwords and the archive becomes usable.

Restricted permissions block ordinary work too — a report you cannot print, a reference you cannot quote from, a form you cannot fill in. And most PDF tools, merging and compression included, cannot touch an encrypted file at all, so unlocking is often just the first step of something else.

Doing it responsibly

Removing a password removes it for everyone who subsequently receives the file. That is fine for your own bank statements and wrong for a document shared with you under an expectation of confidentiality. When in doubt, unlock a working copy and keep the protected original.

Copyright is unaffected by any of this. Being able to print a document does not grant you the right to redistribute it.

Why the password never leaves your device

Every step runs inside your browser, using the WebAssembly and Canvas APIs your device already ships with. No file is uploaded, no copy is kept, and nothing sits in a queue on a server waiting to be deleted — which is also why the tool keeps working with the network disconnected.

That matters more here than anywhere else on the site, because unlocking needs both the confidential file and the password protecting it. A server-based tool would have you hand a stranger both halves at once. Here decryption happens in your browser and neither half is ever transmitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this tool crack a password I don't know?

No. You must know the password — the tool simply uses it to open the file and save an unlocked copy. It cannot break or guess passwords.

Will the unlocked PDF be identical to the original?

Visually yes, but pages are re-rendered during unlocking, so text in the output is no longer selectable or searchable. It looks the same but behaves like a scanned copy.

Is my password or file sent anywhere?

No. Both the password and the PDF are processed locally in your browser and never transmitted to any server.

Can you unlock a PDF if I don't know the password?

No. The file is encrypted with AES-256 and there is no way in without the password. Anyone advertising otherwise is either guessing or misleading you.

Is removing a PDF password legal?

For documents you own or are authorised to use, yes — removing protection from your own bank statement is no different from filing the paper copy unsealed. Circumventing protection on someone else's copyrighted material in order to redistribute it is not.

Does unlocking change the document?

Only the encryption layer is removed. Pages, text, images, form fields and bookmarks are identical; the file simply opens without a prompt.

Why can't I merge or compress my PDF?

Because it is encrypted, and its page contents cannot be read until it is decrypted. Unlock it first and the other tools will work normally.

Can I re-protect the file later?

Yes — use Protect PDF to set a new password. That is a good way to replace a weak bank-issued password with a strong one of your own.
