Print sizes and the pixels they need

Labs print at 300 dots per inch, so every print size has a pixel size hiding behind it: divide the millimetres by 25.4 and multiply by 300. A 10 × 15 cm print wants 1181 × 1772 px, 13 × 18 wants 1535 × 2126, 9 × 13 wants 1063 × 1535, 4 × 6 in wants 1200 × 1800 and A4 wants 2480 × 3508. Any modern phone exceeds all of these, which means the question is never whether you have enough pixels but which ones survive the crop.

The tool presets the common sizes and prints the pixel size next to them. Type a custom size in millimetres for anything else — a 30 × 45 cm poster, a 6 × 9 cm wallet print, a square 10 × 10 for a photo book.

Why the lab keeps cutting heads off

Phone cameras shoot at 4:3; most print sizes are 3:2 (10 × 15, 13 × 18 is close, 20 × 30) or something else again (A4 is 1:1.41, square is 1:1). When the proportions do not match, the lab either trims the photo to fill the paper or leaves white bands — and its default is to trim, from both edges, without looking at what is there. That is how group photos lose the people at the ends.

Doing the crop yourself before ordering is the whole point of this tool. Fill & crop shows exactly what the print will contain; Fit with white border shrinks the photo until all of it fits and pads the rest with white, the right choice for anything you would rather not cut, at the cost of a small margin.

Portrait, landscape and batches

A 10 × 15 print can be tall or wide; the paper is the same, only the orientation changes. The tool reads each photo's orientation (including the rotation flag phones write into the file) and turns the frame to match, so a landscape shot becomes 15 × 10 rather than being cropped to a tall strip. The Landscape switch overrides that if you want a tall crop from a wide photo.

For a whole holiday's worth of pictures, add them all: each is checked individually, sized at the same setting and packed into one ZIP you can drop straight onto the lab's upload page.
